Summer Berries (Memories Radiate)

Contemporary Japanese artist Sawako Utsumi has a deep appreciation for nature, particularly in observing a wide variety of birds — from woodland species to those like kingfishers and dippers that depend on rivers and waterways for their survival.
Naturally, her love of birds extends to a deep appreciation for plants, flowers, trees, and other elements of the natural world. This connection is especially vivid during the summer to early autumn months, when berries are in abundance — from the vibrant clusters of the Rowan tree to the dark, rich fruits of the Elder.

Hence, Utsumi selected a variety of berries to complete her latest artwork. While birds remain unseen, the presence of the berries evokes the warmth of summer into early autumn — and the quiet memory of watching birds feast on nature’s offerings during those long, sunlit days. In this way, her piece resonates with personal recollections and serves as a gentle meditation on the passage of time and the ever-flowing rhythm of the seasons.
