Buddhist Art and the Spiritual Radiance of Jizo

Buddhist Art and the Spiritual Radiance of Jizo

The revered Buddhist monk Nichiren (1222-1282) said, “More valuable than treasures in a storehouse are the treasures of the body. The most valuable of all are the treasures of the heart.”

Sawako Utsumi focuses on the radiance of Jizō (Ojizō-sama) in Japanese Buddhism. Accordingly, her work evokes a fusion of continuity, guidance, hope, peace, and tranquility that gently permeates the mind.

The MET Museum says, “Jizō is an enlightened being who, out of compassion, leads others along the Buddhist path. He is best known for rescuing souls from hell and protecting children.”
