Traditional Joy in North England (Homage to L.S. Lowry)

Sawako Utsumi is a contemporary artist who was born in Ishinomaki (Miyagi prefecture)

In this lovely homage to L.S. Lowry, she uplifts the simplistic scene of a child enjoying life. However, it is the joy without materialism or modern-day gadgets – that is striking.

In the modern world, joy from simplicity seems devoid of the imagery of the 21st century. Hence, the natural world of happiness and communication is clear for all to see. Unlike the world of iPhones, gaming, social media, and similar angles, talking in the real world is evasive.

The British Museum says about Lowry, “Painter and draughtsman, noted for his depictions of northern British industrial and urban scenes, populated with ‘matchstick’ people. Born in Stretford, Lancashire; spending his early years in Victoria Park, Rusholme, Manchester, moving in 1909 with his parents to Pendlebury, Lancs. Left school in 1904 and began work as a clerk, studying art in the evenings, firstly 1905-15 at the Manchester School of Art under Pierre Adolphe Valette and then 1915-25 at Salford Technical College.”

Utsumi’s artistic homage to Lowry amplifies positivity. Accordingly, the simplistic scene is far more revolutionary than it appears – no materialism is needed, and a working-class culture uplifted based on “love.”

Lowry said, “I am a simple man and I use simple materials: Ivory Black, Vermilion, Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre, Flake White and no medium. That’s all I’ve ever used in my paintings.”
