The Dipper in the United Kingdom

The Dipper in the United Kingdom

The contemporary Japanese artist Sawako Utsumi adores watching birds in her native Japan – and on her travels. Hence, her art of the dipper bird above.

Dippers are lovely birds to watch by rivers and other suitable habitats connected to water.

Indeed, they are unique among the songbirds of the British Isles, concerning being able to dive, swim, and wade through water in search of food.

They bob up and down on rocks in the river or by a nice stream. Also, the lovely white throat on the breast of a dipper is very striking.

In Welsh, the dipper is known as a ‘bird of the torrent.’

They also forage on river and stream banks.
