Buddhist Holy Men in the Deep Winter

Buddhist Holy Men in the Deep Winter

The stunning art piece above by the contemporary Japanese artist Sawako Utsumi depicts two wandering Buddhist monks in the bleak midwinter. Indeed, the religious angle, be it Buddhism, Christianity, or Shintoism, are themes that crop up often – in her delightful art.

Nichiren (1222-1282) said, “To accept is easy; to continue is difficult. But Buddhahood lies in continuing faith.”

Accordingly, irrespective if these two Buddhist monks are returning home – or are on a religious pilgrimage – they accept all difficulties, without flinching from the right path.

Nichiren also pointedly said: “Life in this world is limited. Never be in the least bit afraid!”
